General information
Project Moon creates stories in a single universe shared across all their projects so far. This means that there is a lot of things that are mentioned in several stories, and if you really want to go through this without spoilers, the order is very important. I’ll do my best to give you the information you need to make your choices =)
It is to be noted that at the time of writing this, going through the video games with no other stories is self-sufficient, even though you’ll miss some background (and worldbuilding, but this is visibly in the process of being added to Limbus Company bit by bit).
The video games
The most known stories, also the most easy to find. Their chronological order in-universe is the same as the release order.
- Lobotomy Corporation: available only on Steam, it’s the very first story in the ProjMoon-verse. If you’d rather go through a Let’s Play than play it by yourself, there is a text+screenshots one on lparchive: Lobotomy Corporation by TeeQueue. I have no recommendation for video Let’s Play, don’t hesitate to share yours in the comments.
- Library of Ruina: available on Steam and Xbox, and releasing on PS4 and Switch on April 25th 2024, it takes place immediately after Lobotomy Corporation, so if you start with this game you will be heavily spoiled about LobCorp. On the other hand Library of Ruina does what’s necessary to be understandable with no knowledge of LobCorp (it’s very well done, but it’s still less impactful if you haven’t gone through the whole previous story). Unlike LobCorp, this game is voiced, so if you go the Let’s Play route I really recommend looking at videos for the cutscenes at least. There’s an ongoing text+screenshots+links to videos Let’s Play on Something Awful with backup on LP Beach, also by TeeQueue. (When it’s finished and archived I’ll put the archive link instead.) I’m taking recommendations for video Let’s Play.
- Limbus Company: available on Steam, Android’s Google Play and IOS’s App Store, it takes place some time after Library of Ruina. It’s less directly linked to the previous games than Ruina was to LobCorp, but the spoilers are present for all aspects from worldbuilding to specific characters’ story. The game follows a pattern of episodic release and is currently ongoing. I currently have no recommendation of Let’s Play.
Other Project Moon stories
These range from less known but actually easy to access to outright not accessible anymore in their original version. And there are lots of formats too. I’ll list them in rough in-universe chronological order.
- Untitled: part of the ending of Lobotomy Corporation in video form, available with English subtitles on ProjMoon youtube channel. It is literally part of the ending of the game so it’s 100% made of spoilers. But animated and voiced.
- WonderLab: webcomic, original unavailable. Can be read on imgur (upside: chaptered with chapter titles; downside: each chapter opens a new tab) or on the Internet Archive (upside: easy to navigate; downside: not chaptered). It’s a spin-off of Lobotomy Corporation, taking place roughly at the same time, and ending a bit after the game, so it’s recommended to read it after you’re done with LobCorp. It introduces concepts reused later in the ProjMoon-verse, but is currently in a weird status of having been made non-canon while still showing things clearly canon. It is an interesting read, but be aware that the characters not already appearing in other Project Moon stories do not belong to ProjMoon and thus will not be brought back.
- A Fritter Called Jeon: self-described “audio theater”, it’s a voice acted and lightly animated youtube video adding to the background of some Library of Ruina characters. It is clearly spoilers for Ruina.
- The Pianist: short story, original unavailable. Korean version on the Wayback Machine and fantranslation (allowed by ProjMoon as per this post (also crediting the author)), salvaged by a combination of the Wayback Machine and a friend’s technical knowledge, readable here. It was originally used to tease Library of Ruina, and speaks of an event that’s important to the story of Library of Ruina. The angle is quite different though so while I would consider it spoilers for Ruina, your mileage may vary.
- Distortion Detective: webnovel, discontinued. It’s a spin-off of Library of Ruina, taking place roughly at the same time and exploring different events. Given the worldbuilding elements it uses, I’d advise to go through Ruina first, but it doesn’t spoil anything story-wise. It’s left unfinished because Project Moon announced they plan to rework it in a video game format when they can. Still worth the read (and Project Moon clearly announced they would put elements of Distortion Detective in Limbus Company). A comic version of chapter 19 was created as a test for Leviathan, its official version is currently unavailable (cf Leviathan below) but it is readable on reddit.
- Leviathan: webcomic/webnovel, taking place between Library of Ruina and Limbus Company and bridging the gap between the two. The official version can be a bit tricky to access because the website is in Korean and you need to create an account to access this story (it’s rated mature for violence), and the last chapters never got translated; there is a Steam guide with direct access to both the officially translated chapters and a fantrad of what’s missing. (EDIT: as of July 26th 2024, the webcomic part as been taken down from the official version, please refer to the Steam guide.) Not necessary to understand Limbus but reframes quite a lot of things. If you want to read it I’d advise to do so before playing too far into Limbus because there are now heavy spoilers for Leviathan in Limbus.
Bonus
HamHamPangPang is a real restaurant owned by Project Moon, they do self-product-placement, yes. It’s in South Korea and has themed menus and official merch.
